The 5th Virginia-Class Submarine --
SSN-778


PCU New Hampshire (SSN-778)
, a Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submaine, is slated to be the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the state of New Hampshire. The name was awarded to the submarine after a letter-writing campaign by the third-graders from Garrison Elementary School in Dover, NH to their Congressmembers, the state Governor, and the Secretary of the Navy.

2003 - The contract to build her was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, CT (August 14).

2004 - Construction began in January. Click here for construction photos from Northrop Grumman.

2007 - A keel-laying ceremony for the submarine was held at Electric Boat's Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI on April 30, 2007, attended by the ship's sponsor Cheryl McGuinness of Portsmouth, NH. She is the widow of Thomas McGuinness, co-pilot of  American Airlines Flight 11, who died on September 11, 2001 when the jet was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York.

2008 -The USS New Hampshire was the first Virginia-class sub to be delivered with the sail attached to the bow section. (Photos above show the delivery of Sections 8-9,left and completed hull, right. Photos below show the roll-out and SSN-778 at the dock.)

 

  


 

 

The Christening ceremony (above)took place on June 21 at Electric Boat in Groton, CT. Commissioning to take place on October 25 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
