Support Our Submarine!
The third-graders at the Garrison Elementary School in Dover, New Hampshire did their part. Teledyne D.G. O'Brien, FairPoint Communications, Wheelabrator, Inc./Waste Management, Sean & Kristen Mahoney and Wal-Mart of New Hampshire pitched in. In the weeks leading up to the October 25, 2008 Commissioning many businesses, community groups and individuals provided the support that allowed the celebration to happen. The Community Commissioning Committee thanks all of you!
Thanks to a persistent letter-writing campaign enlisting the support of the New Hampshire Congressional delegation and Governor Lynch, schoolchildren in Dover convinced the Secretary of the Navy that it was time once again to float the proud name USS NEW HAMPSHIRE.
The submarine New Hampshire (SSN-778), christened on June 21, 2008 -- on the 220th anniversary of New Hampshire's statehood and the 220th anniversary of the ratification of the US Constitution that made us a nation. On October 25, 2008 she will be commissioned at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the first US Navy shipyard (1800, and thus, the oldest) and the first Navy shipyard to build a Navy submarine (1917). That event, steeped in US Navy traditions, is our day to celebrate our submarine and our state. The NEW HAMPSHIRE deserves a celebration that will make New Hampshire proud. As sub sponsor Cheryl McGuinness of Portsmouth said when she christened the boat, "I see many heroes" speaking of the crew who will sail in harm's way in our name.
We had just a short time to raise the funds needed for an appropriate Commissioning Celebration for the USS New Hampshire. Because she was delivered 14 months ahead of schedule (click here for many other firsts logged in the construction of SSN-778), we had just 3 months to prepare a once-in-a-lifetime welcome for the sub and her crew and raise the necessary $300,000.
These companies, groups and individuals signed on to support our submarine.
Thank you, all.
